Research project

Healthy Communities for Youth

I am professor of epidemiology in the Departments of Family Medicine and Population Health and Obstetrics and Gynecology at Virginia Commonwealth University with expertise in maternal and child health epidemiology. I received a Doctor of Medicine degree from Gondar Medical College of Sciences in Ethiopia and a Doctor of Public Health degree from the University of California at Berkeley. I worked in Oakland, Calif., and at Marshall University in West Virginia before joining VCU in 2001.

I am the program director of the Master of Public Health and Doctor of Philosophy programs in the Division of Epidemiology in the VCU Department of Family Medicine and Population Health. I am also director of community based participatory research at the VCU Institute for Women’s Health, a federally designated National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health, and serve as principal investigator of multiple federally-funded research projects in the areas of perinatal health, youth violence prevention and provision of comprehensive care to underserved families. I have authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and delivered several national scientific presentations.
